GFD planning golf scramble
Local children who have suffered burn injuries may have a chance to go to camp thanks to the efforts of members of the Greencastle Fire Department.
The department's 9th annual golf scramble is set for June 14 at the Old Hickory Golf Course. Proceeds from the event will be used to send local children ages 8-18 to Hoosier Burn Camp in Dayton.
"A bunch of different departments raise money to help send kids to camp," said GFD Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Mace. "We usually raise enough to send five or six kids."
Activities at the camp include canoeing, paddle boating, fishing, swimming, archery, crafts, hayrides, horseback riding and many others.
Special programs are developed at the camp to help children build their self-esteem and realize their potential, while at the same time assisting them in developing coping mechanisms to deal with physical scarring and psychological trauma.
Mace has visited the camp in the past.
"It's a really moving experience," he said.
Staff at the camp includes medical personnel, social workers, therapists, fire service personnel and adult burn survivor volunteers.
"There is no cost to the family," information at the camp's Web site www.hoosierburncamp.org said. "It costs our organization approximately $1,000 per child to attend camp. We are able to do this solely through donations we receive."
Registration for the scramble will begin a 7:30 a.m. Shotgun start will be at 8 a.m.
Entries are limited to 25 teams of four. Entry fee is $50 per person. Mulligans are available for $5 each, with a limit of two per player. Entry forms are available at Old Hickory Creek Golf Course or the Greencastle Fire Department. Deadline for entries is Monday.
Hole sponsors are still being sought. Cost to sponsor a hole is $60.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams, longest drive and closest to pin.
