Restaurant may join Sears, clothing store at Putnam Plaza

Tuesday, June 24, 2008

With a Sears hardware store set to open soon inside Greencastle's Putnam Plaza shopping center, it appears a new restaurant may be coming too, the site's developer said Monday.

Midland Atlantic, the company that bought the shopping center earlier this year, received approval Monday night from the city plan commission to subdivide two lots along Indianapolis Road between O'Reilly Auto Parts and National City Bank.

One of the owners of Midland Atlantic, Aaron Boyle, told city officials Monday that the company is currently in negotiations with a restaurant to open in the lot next to the auto parts store. He declined to identify the restaurant but said an announcement will be made once a lease agreement is met.

Plan commission members gave their strong support of the project and voted unanimously to approve the request.

"I'm excited," board member Colleen Matthews said.

So far, the company has confirmed that the Sears store is set to open soon in the empty section once occupied by Wal-Mart and that a Peeble's department store will move into an adjacent space later this summer.

More information about Peeble's can be found on the company's website, peebles.com

Boyle told the plan commission he is optimistic that the remaining spaces in the strip center will be filled in the future. He said he thought all of the current tenants of the shopping center, which include Tractor Supply, are planning to stay as well.

"We're excited about being in Greencastle," Boyle said after the meeting. "It's a great community."

  • Man, I hope it's not another fast food joint. We could use a real "sit-down" restaurant rather than yet another burger, pizza or taco joint.

  • I agree with you on NO MORE FAST FOOD but why not try one of our locally owned "sit-down" restaurants? Like Chiefs, Toppers, Monon, or the "New" Mexican restaurant or how about Final Approach, or Almost home or maybe Jacksons? I honestly dont feel there is ANY need for another food chain in our town!

  • i welcome any new restaurant and yes I have tried the mentioned restaurants. I would like a varity and I can think of several chains which would provide good choices, good food and fair prices. Hopefully more than one will be on the way.

  • The one mentioned is not a 'sit down' restaurant as you were hoping. However, it will be nice to have a new restaurant chain in town. Maybe someone will bring in a sit down restaurant as well. As for the ones already here.... I've tried 'em too. Nice but it would be good to have a selection too. And by the way, DON'T even look for a 'sit down' restaurant on Sunday evening in this town...They're closed! The one coming sounds interesting though.

  • What...no White Castle?

  • How about putting in: Starbuck's, White Castle, Texas Roadhouse, Best Buy, Lowe's,etc....

Any other suggestions? Throw some more idea places. This town is lacking all the good places.

I agree pointer...It would be nice to see "Applebees, Chili's, Long Horn, Texas Roadhouse, etc...I get tired of driving to Plainfield, Avon, or Terre Haute for a change of pace. We would rather spend the money in our home town. Maybe even think about a doughnut shop in one of the spaces.

  • bannerstuff - which one was mentioned?

  • Where's Chiefs? I've never heard of that one. I'll take an Applebee's, White Castle or Steak-n-Shake. Or anything that is open 24 hours. Ooooh, I want a Waffle House!

  • Amen...almost anything new is a step up, although I am for anything that isn't McDonald's.

  • We'll get whatever the market research indicated this market will support. I hope it's good. I'm tired of driving to Avon, Plainfield or Indy.

I'll bet it's not a Buca di Beppo.

  • Well, I am sort of close to this story being that I am a realtor here in town and have spoken with two of the families that are coming here to run the new restaurant. And I am very excited to say that it is ......Sonic Drive In.

They are very big down south and are growing by the day. I mean you can go there and eat every day for a month and never eat the same thing twice and they have all kinds of different drinks, slushes and milkshakes and you never have to get out of your car!!!!!!Your food is brought out to you by carhops on roller skates, just like back in the 50's... And I know for a fact that they are very excited to be coming here.....

here is the link to find out more about Sonic Drive In.........www.sonicdrivein.com/

  • Does anyone remember Waffle House being where the Barnyard restraunt is??? I remember it. It was there in the early 80's.. Also, Sonic is a good restraunt to eat at... Also it is fast food. Terra Haute had one on South 41 where dog & suds used to be... It's now gone. Apparently Terra Haute couldn't give it enough business to keep it going, so what makes them think Greencstle can do it? Just my opinion..

  • Try Chief's, 1/2 block east of the square on Franklin St. Great food, great service, and locally owned.

  • Was it a true "Waffle House" or just called the waffle house in the early 80's at the old Fairway? And yes, Waffle House is good. Sometimes, I get off my high horse, change from my Louis Vuitton purse to a Kroger sack, quit driving my Lexus and go to the Hatchback and go to Waffle House where no one will know me.

  • I too, would love to see a nice sit down restaurant come to town. An Applebee's would do well in Greencastle. The last thing we need is another fastfood place. If it comes we need to help these places stay in business. This way we can possible get someone like Applebees's or Bob Evans. When it comes to the local places such as the Double or the Monon; the service has much to be desired. The Monon has so much activity coming and going in and out of the kitchen I choose not to put any money into a business that allows those kind of things to be going on. We need a nice family, friendly place to go. I myself have been in the restaurant business for almost 10 years now and we need a good place for those who enjoy the business to work and use their skills.

  • Would love to see a good restaurant with a good menu.. What about a GOOD PanCake House, or Culver's..since this is a College Town I think a White Castle would go over good..

-- Posted by Saralee on Thu, Jul 3, 2008, at 10:28 AM
  • Are you kidding? Sonic? How many fast food joints does one little college town need? If a person needs their food brought out to the car, I'm thinking that person should be very happy with the Sonic. Too bad it couldn't be a nice restaurant.

  • I think we absolutely need more choices beyond fast food. With gas prices, even a drive to Avon is too far. What would it take for Greencastle to get a Golden Corral or Ponderosa?????? With a family of 4 (with 2 growing boys), even eating at fast food costs close to $30 these days. It would be nice to have one of the nicer steak buffets locally!!!!
