Overall Poultry Grand Champion Taylor Alles and Overall Reserve Grand Champion Colton Cox won these awards at the Putnam County 4-H Poultry Show on July 21.

The 2008 Putnam County 4-H Poultry Show was the last for three 10-year members and the first in the new poultry barn.

"It's the 10-year members' time to fly the coop so to speak," show superintendent Clint Maddox said.

Sarah Myers, Becca Seahorn and Ashlyn Archer showed their last birds on July 21. Archer said she has participated in poultry club for all 10 of her 4-H years.

"We always had chickens at home for the fresh eggs," Archer said. "It is just a bonus to get to show them."

Archer also said finally getting a poultry barn has been a highlight of her 4-H career.

"We all helped build it on a volunteer basis," Archer said. "We also have been doing fundraising for years to pay for it."

Poultry have traditional been held in a tent that had to be set up every year. Archer said the new barn makes setup much easier.

Every poultry club member received a bright turquoise T-shirt this year featuring the "Top 10" reasons to participate in poultry. The new barn was the number one reason for participating. Karaoke night, the chicken suit and first year initiation also made the list.

"Karaoke night is so fun," Archer said. "We are a fun bunch."

Taylor Alles's bird took the overall poultry grand champion and Colton Cox's bird took reserve grand champion. Sisters Brittany and Rachelle Lady took meat pen champion and reserve champion as well.
