Florence Elizabeth (Betty) McVay passed away on July 29, 2008 at the Indiana Masonic Home where she received loving care from friends and staff since 2004.

While at the Masonic Home, Florence had made many friends and became reacquainted with friends from her college and working days. Florence made many new friends wherever she lived. Her love of kittens and cats was encouraged by staff members who gave her many books and stuffed animals to share with friends on her floor.

Florence was the daughter of Harry and Cloe (Patrick) Higgins and was born in Danville, Ind. She graduated from Bainbridge High School and finished a two-year Business Program at Central Normal College in Danville. During her lifetime, Florence had worked at banks and offices in the Montpelier and Lafayette areas.

Florence and her husband, Julian McVay, lived in the Lafayette area for many years. Later, Florence relocated to Crawfordsville. She enjoyed reading, playing the piano, embroidery and helping others.

Her husband, Julian (1993), and daughter, Ann Stansbury (1980), preceded her in death as well as her two brothers and parents.

Florence last attended the Groveland Presbyterian Church with family and friends prior to moving to Franklin. She was also a member of the Groveland Eastern Star and had received a 50-year pin some years ago.

In her final years, Florence's life-long family friends, Lynn and Janice Montgomery and their family, reciprocated to Florence the love and care she has shown to their family by ensuring her wellbeing. Florence was dearly loved and will always be remembered for her gentle nature and loving ways.

A memorial service will be held at the Indiana Masonic Home Ransford Chapel in the Administrative Building, on Friday, Aug. 1 at 1 p.m. Mrs. McVay will be laid to rest at the Bainbridge Cemetery.

Donations to the Indiana Masonic Home or Alzheimer's Research are appreciated.
