Pizza King closed for renovations

In a time of economic hardships and local businesses mysteriously jumping ship, one business is simply in need of improvement.

Greencastle's Pizza King has been in the community for 30 years. Recently, it has been closed -- but not because of any economic difficulty.

During the rash of recent storms, the Pizza King building sustained enough damage to prompt manager Suzie Watjen to temporarily close shop.

"We didn't think it was too bad at first," Watjen said. "But when we got into the attic we realized it was a lot worse than expected. The building is structurally unsound."

Presently, they have applied for a building permit from the State of Indiana.

These permits generally take a couple of weeks to get back.

"Once we get the building permit, we'll have a better idea of how soon we will be able to re-open," said Watjen. "Right now the assistant manager and I are in the process of taking everything out of the building."

They have also hired a contractor and an engineer to help remodel the building.

At this time, the contractor has not given a final price quote on repairs.

"It is going to be a lot more than expected," said Watjen.

Watjen also reported that the owner, John Purvis, has no reports of wanting to close the facility. In fact, they are hoping for a speedy reopening.

Whenever the remodel is complete, Pizza King will have a grand re-opening. At this time, it is believed the repairs may take around two months.

  • My first date with my soon to be husband at that time was a pizza from the Pizza King back in 1971 so it has been there longer than 30 years.... I have many years left the Cloverdale area but have many fond memories of stopping there on my way home from work at the Mallory plant with my good friend and neighbor Pat F. we all shared many a pizza from that establishment.
