County girls in action at Terre Haute South
TERRE HAUTE -- All three Putnam County girls' golf teams were in action Tuesday at the Terre Haute South Invitational at Rea Park. Greencastle was the area's top finisher, placing seventh with a 437. South Putnam was ninth with a 454. Cloverdale placed 10th with a 470.
Chelsea Samuels led the Tiger Cub effort with a 95. Diane Wokoun was next with a 106, followed by Katie Hedge's 116. Kristen Hutcheson closed out the GHS scoring with a 120.
"We had trouble maintaining good play throughout the whole round," GHS coach Brad Kingma said. "Each girl alternated stretches of good and bad holes. We'll have to work on the mental part of the game and not letting up."
South Putnam's Heather Hughes posted the best county score with a 90. She was followed by Kelsey Searles with a 115. Sarah Dobson added a 124, and Cassie Warren was just behind with a 125.
For the Clovers, Kayla Langdon led the way with a 96, but Coach Ken Williams was perhaps most pleased with the 101 of Elizabeth Wiley. The junior had four pars on the way to her best 18-hole score ever.
"Elizabeth is continuing to develop consistency by posting 13 of 18 holes at double bogey or better," Williams said.
Victoria Boyette also had her best 18-hole score with a 122. Erica Looper closed out the Clover effort with a 151.
"Victoria shot 58 on the back nine to break 60 for the first time," Williams said.
"Erica hit more good shots , but problems around the greens prevented her from posting a better score," he continued.
Langdon looked to be on her way to a nice finish in the tournament until bad luck struck on the back nine.
"Kayla had a decent round going (43 on the front) until the 'tree gods' got to her on the last five holes.
All three squads are back in action today.

Next match -- Cloverdale visits Forest Park at 4:30 p.m. today for a three-way match with Northview and Linton. Greencastle travels to Deer Creek for a three-way with Cascade and Brownsburg at 4:30 p.m. today. South Putnam hosts North Montgomery at 4:30 p.m. today at Oak Ridge.
