Cougar volleyball falls to Patriots

Friday, August 22, 2008

SPENCER -- The North Putnam volleyball team dropped to 1-1 on the season with a three-game loss at Owen Valley Wednesday.

Although the Cougars may have struggled with the Patriots, new coach Jill Schreiber was happy with the effort and the progress the team is making.

"The game was a loss in the book, but considered a win with the team," Schreiber said. "We played well. We are still getting used to each other; we have only practiced with each other six times since the season began.

"The girls are still in the process of learning a new defense," she continued. "They are still adjusting to the different coverage areas."

Senior Taylor Alles led the Cougar effort with four kills and two blocks. Carlye McGaughey was just behind with three kills. Megan Gray had thirteen assists, and Paxton Stephenson picked up six digs.

"The girls started to move, and I was able to see some things we worked on in practice," Schreiber said. "We will get there. The girls play and practice hard, and I am proud of their efforts last night. The team is beginning to play as a team."

The Cougars host the Early Bird Tourney at 9 a.m. Saturday. Crawfordsville battles Mooresville at 9 a.m., and North Putnam plays Attica in the second game.
