GHS tennis wins 4-1 in WCC match

A year after losing six seniors, a team could enter the dreaded "rebuilding" mode. But as Greencastle boys' tennis rebuilds, they might as well pick up some wins along the way.

Logan Grzesiek hits a return against Speedway's Mike Garcia Tuesday. Grzesiek would win his No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-3.

The Tiger Cubs defeated Speedway 4-1 Tuesday night. Given that these are the only two WCC schools with boys' tennis programs, the Cubs also became the conference champions with the victory.

"I think they did fantastic. They showed a lot of improvement, and it was nice to get that win at home after five or six matches and show that progress. They're making progress and you feel like you've turned a corner," GHS coach Bart Spencer said.

The win brings the Tiger Cubs' season record to 2-4.

"They're making a lot of progress. From the first match two weeks ago they are a lot better," Spencer said. "Tennis is a technique sport, so it's about practicing your technique."

Ty Fauvergue led the GHS effort at No. 1 singles, picking up a 6-4, 6-0 win over the Sparkplugs' Mark Lottes. At No. 2 singles, fellow senior Logan Grzesiek added a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Mike Garcia.

Spencer is happy with how his seniors have been playing in the early going this year.

"They're coming on real strong. They're both having good games," Spencer said.

The doubles teams have been up in the air early in the season, as five different players fight for four positions. However, on Tuesday the results did not show the lack of varsity experience.

At No. 1 doubles, Vic Ness and Dustin York defeated Speedway's Ryan Cody and Nathan Cardoza 6-2, 6-2. In the No. 2 slot, Xander Hazel and Cy Spencer defeated Alex Bunge and Jake Wilson 6-4, 6-2.

Spencer said things are gelling, especially for his No. 1 team.

"My No. 1 doubles team is coming together and learning to play together," the coach said.

Greencastle senior Ty Fauvergue hits a return in his 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles Tuesday.

As for the fifth man in that double rotation, he got some valuable experience in singles play on Tuesday. Joey Kass filled in at No. 3 singles, falling to Speedway's Jared Trackwell 6-1, 6-2.

The singles opportunity for Kass came due to the absence of regular No. 1 David Cath, who was playing soccer for the Tiger Cubs on Tuesday. While this could have been a good opportunity for the Sparkplugs, their No. 1 was also absent, as he was running in a cross country meet.

In spite of participating in two sports, the coach said the Cath's tennis game is looking really good, as he has dropped only one match this season.

"He's got a great stroke and he's looking really good," Spencer said. "He's learning to play against different styles."

Spencer was also happy to see his team pick up a win in spite of Cath's absence.

"We're just looking forward to David coming back tomorrow night and getting back in the groove. We're looking forward to seeing him again," Spencer said.

As the Cubs continue to rebuild, Spencer is happy to see good participation on the team this year. Now he just wants to see them gain experience.

"After losing six seniors, getting 10 out this year is a big deal. We definitely need to get them involved earlier with middle school," Spencer concluded.
