Spencer reaches milestone

GHS senior Hannah Spencer is presented the game ball by head coach Maurice McKee after reaching 100 career goals after Saturday's contest with Mooresville.

Saturday proved to be a great day for Greencastle's Hannah Spencer.

In Greencastle's match with Mooresville, Spencer connected on two goals, which put her at 100 goals for her high school career, a rare feat for a high school athlete.

A big sigh of relief was present as Spencer explained her feelings on reaching her career milestone.

"Mostly relief because you try not to think about it, but I was pretty sure I was going to be stuck on 98 (goals) forever -- that I would never make it to the century mark," Spencer said. "eah, I'd say mostly relief because it's in the back of my mind.

"It's not like you want to think about it, but it's that gigantic thing right in front of you," Spencer added.

Spencer joked about her fear of sitting on 99 goals in the last game of the season and seeing her final kick not find the net.

A lifelong player and lover of sports, Spencer credited her family and teammates with helping her achieve her record.

"My family was so into sports, from day one you constantly have a ball in your hands and your feet," she said. "Soccer for me was just a different thrill. I don't know if at first it was crashing into people and not getting into trouble, but as I've grown up, it's the one that… my passion could never waiver for soccer."

Most players would relish their time in the spotlight, but Spencer is concentrating on helping her team achieve their goals. Coming off a successful season, Spencer hopes the team can replicate last year's achievements.

"Right now, I just want to get better as a team," she said. "The game is about 11 people. My 100 goals is great, but I share it with my teammates, because without them, my 100 goals doesn't happen; even my teammates at Crawfordsville teammates and all my coaches, I owe it to them.

"The game is about 11 people on the field and your eight subs, so right now its day by day getting better and hopefully repeating as sectional champions. That's our goal regardless of any records -- my records, team records; we're looking for a repeat," Spencer commented.

Spencer scored three goals in Tuesday contest against South Vermillion.
