Pair to perform at DePauw Wednesday

Saturday, September 6, 2008

DePauw School of Music faculty members soprano Barbara Pare' and pianist John Clodfelter will present a recital on Wednesday in Thompson Recital Hall at 7:30 PM in the Green Center for the Performing Arts.

The recital, entitled "Sex, Lies and Executions: A Woman's Destiny", takes the listener through the joys and struggles of royalty depicted in song.

The program features the works of Benjamin Britten, Maurice Ravel, Francis Poulenc and Robert Schumann. The final work on the program is the song cycle, "Try Me Good King: Last Words of the Wives of Henry VIII," by American composer Libby Larsen. In the words of the composer, this song cycle "is a monodrama of anguish and power."

To enhance the atmosphere of the program, a visual presentation by Theresa Noble will accompany the performance.

Pare' and Clodfelter have been described as having "a very special connection and chemistry" in their musical collaboration. Both were recently heard in concert during the Greencastle Summer Classical Music Festival.

Pare' is soloist/section leader at Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church, and Clodfelter is organist at St. Andrews Episcopal Church.

This concert is free and open to the public.
