Chalk Art Bash '08

Saturday, September 6, 2008

Plans are well under way for the 2008 Chalk Art Bash, scheduled to take place on the Greencastle square, on Sept. 20. This is the second year for the sidewalk chalk art event.

Bring your own chalk and you will receive 8-foot-by-8-foot section of sidewalk in the Visitors Cove downtown Greencastle. Prizes will be awarded for the most original, most lifelike and peoples choice.

Putnam County Convention and Visitors' Bureau Chief Karla Lawless, who along with her assistant Sharon Eiteljorge organized last year's inaugural event, told the Banner Graphic that all kinds of prizes have been received.

"I'm very pleased," she said. "The prizes keep coming in."

Prizes for the event include tickets for Conner Prairie, the Indiana State Museum, Wonderlab, Evansville Zoo and Gardens, Holiday World and the Howard Steamboat Museum and Mansion.

There are also passes for Cave Country Adventures, Ben and Ari's, Auburn Cord Dusiy Museum, Deep River Water Park, Shedds Aquarium and the Indianapolis Zoo.

Tickets for the Indianapolis Indians, Ashley Square Theater, Grand County Music Hall, Children's Museum and Indiana Repertory Theatre will be given out.

There is also an autographed Colts football, autographed photo of Jaclyn Smith, CD's and autographed photo of the bob & tom show, a Hoosier Park Race Track packet and autographs from the Andretti/Green Racing team plus plenty of other prizes.

Lawless fashioned the event, which encourages participants to create sidewalk art using chalk, after one that is held each year in the city of Fort Wayne. Lawless was pleased with the attendance at Greencastle's event last year and hopes to double the numbers this year.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and awards will be given out at 2 p.m. Cost per spot is $5 plus one canned good. All monies will be given to the Return-A-Gift Charity and canned goods will go to the Senior Center Food bank.

Containers will be provided to each participant. People are asked to throw change into the can with the best chalk art for the people's choice award. Voting will end at noon.

Corporate sponsors for the 2008 event are IAC, Autumn Glen, Duke Energy, North Salem State Bank, First National Bank, Nucor Steel, JKL Concrete and Old National Bank.

2008 Sponsors are McDonalds, Bright Futures and Ambler Hill.

A rain date for the event has been set for Sept. 27. For information about the event contact the Putnam County Visitors Bureau at 765-653-8743 or 800-829-4639.
