GHS golfers edge Patriots

SPENCER -- The Greencastle girls' golf team narrowly defeated Owen Valley Thursday night at Rolling Meadows, 233-234.

The Tiger Cubs trailed with three scores in, but No. 4 Kay Wood came through late in her round to seal the win for GHS.

"The match was up and down throughout," GHS coach Brad Kingma said. "We were down three strokes after the first three players, but Kay in the No. 4 spot was able to recover from a 13 on her sixth hole with a great pitch from 50 yards to one foot from the hole on her seventh and fives on the last two to beat her opponent by 4 for the team's win."

While the win was nice, Kingma had no delusions that his team had played a satisfactory round.

"While we got the win, we played quite badly," he said. "The girls had been struggling more in their short game, but tonight they hit a lot of poor long game shots, particularly coming up out of the swing and topping it."

Chelsea Samuels led the Tiger Cubs with a 50. Katie Hedge was next for GHS with a 56, followed by Diane Wokoun's 59. Wood's 68 sealed the gave the Cubs their one-stroke victory.

With the WCC meet looming in just one week, Kingma said it is time for his team to relax and refocus.

"We'll have to stop pressing and get our focus back if we're going to score what we'll need to at conference next week," he concluded.

Greencastle visits Edgewood at 5 p.m. Monday.
