Chicken on the menu at Fillmore

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Volunteers are needed to help with the Fillmore Volunteer Fire Department's Annual Chicken Barbeque set for Friday, Sept. 19 and Saturday, Sept. 20 at the fire station.

The annual event is the department's biggest fundraiser. Bob Bills told the Banner Graphic the department needs help setting up for the event during the week prior to and during the barbeque.

"We have to set up the tent, tables and chairs and clean hundreds of chickens. We also need help serving during the barbeque and cooking the noodles the day of the event," said Bills.

People can help as much or as little as they like. Even the desserts and side dishes need to be cut and prepared for hungry customers.

During the Fillmore Town Council meeting last week, Board member Allen Jones told residents the group desperately needed help.

"Anybody at all who can help in any way, we can use," he said.

Donations of side dishes, desserts and noodles are needed. Anyone wanting to volunteer can contact any Fillmore fireman or call Bills at 246-6135.

Cost for the dinner depends upon what the customer chooses to eat. The event begins at 5 p.m. Friday and at noon on Saturday at the Fire Station located at 10 W. Hendricks St. in Fillmore.
