Tiger Cubs struggle at Triton Central

Saturday, September 13, 2008

FAIRLAND -- Triton Central scored on its first three possessions Friday against Greencastle, then held off the determined Tiger Cubs for a 32-10 victory.

A pair of touchdown passes from Jordan Martin to Garrett Pritt and a rushing score by Ben Mohr put the Tigers ahead 19-0 with nine minutes left in the first half, but they were forced to punt on their next four possessions.

Class 3A Greencastle (1-3) eventually pulled within 19-10 early in the third quarter, and Class 2A Triton Central (3-1) didn't put the game away until Martin scored on a 4-yard keeper with 9:32 left in the contest.

Making their first-ever trip to Fairland for a football game, the Tiger Cubs received a rude welcome. After losing four yards on their first possession, the Tiger Cubs punted, and the Tigers returned the ball to the Greencastle 38-yard line. Eight plays later, Mohr punched it in from the 1-yard line for a 6-0 lead.

Triton Central's next two scores came via the Martin-to-Pritt connection. Pritt hauled in a 44-yard pass, shedding several Greencastle tacklers en route to the end zone for his first score. The second touchdown was on a 48-yard completion, with Pritt eluding the defense in the open field.

Late in the second quarter, the Tigers took over on their own 10-yard line, and three runs for negative yards pushed the Tigers back to their 1-yard line, forcing Sullivan to punt from the back of the end zone. The punt went out of bounds at the Tigers' 10-yard line, and Greencastle's Ashton Marshall scored on a 10-yard run to cut the Tigers' lead to 19-7 at halftime.

After Marshall's score, Greencastle tacked on three points on Buzz Deer's 46-yard field goal in the third quarter. Ultimately, the Greencastle offense, which attempted only four passes with a new quarterback, was unable to mount a serious rushing attack, and Triton Central put the game away in the fourth quarter.

Martin scored to make it 26-10, then Brad Mohr added a late 6-yard touchdown run with 22 seconds left in the game to finish off the night.

Greencastle's Jordan Hickam made his first start at quarterback after Graham Shuee was injured earlier in the week. Hickam completed 2-of-4 passes for 31 yards. The junior also was the team's leading rusher with 40 yards on 19 carries.

Triton Central held the Tiger Cubs to 96 total yards.
