Group pounds pavement for donations

For the United Way of Putnam County, a dollar is worth one gram. The organization is hoping to gather 454 grams of dollar bills that would equal 319.38 pounds.

"If we can collect that amount it would get us to our 2008 goal of $145,000," said David English, Putnam County United Way Director.

"I'm really excited about this year's campaign. We have two great co-chairs with Amy Doan and Craig Chrispell. The board of directors is fired up and I hope the community is too," added English.

United Way volunteers worked on six projects last week following the kick-off of the Putnam County United Way campaign.

Those volunteers working at the Humane Shelter, Big Walnut Sports Complex, the Johnson Nichols Health Clinic, Hope Haven, the Red Cross and the Putnam Family Support Center were a visible expression of support for the United Way and it's programs.

The corporate part of the campaign has concluded with over 20 percent of their goal obtained.

"We're very pleased with the response from our corporations. Most have invited us in to talk with employees and kick-off the employee campaign. Now, we move into individual pledges and donations," said English.

Despite a difficult economy English is confident that there are a lot of good people who like to give.

"I believe we will be very successful in our campaign this year despite our alleged economic situation," said English.

There are numerous ways to donate to the United Way. Persons can choose payroll deduction, pay by check, pay quarterly or in one lump sum.

The United Way has a very positive impact on the community. They support numerous agencies including the American Red Cross, Area 7 Agency on Aging, A-Way Home Shelter, Hope Haven Horse Farm, Johnson Nichols Health Clinic, Mental Health America and Opportunity Housing.

Also, the Putnam County Chaplaincy Association, Putnam County Comprehensive Services, the Council on Aging, the Family Support Services, the youth Development commission, the Reading Improvement Center, the Summer Enrichment Program, YMCA of Clay County and the Family, Youth Community Development Program.

"I know we can impact the community in a very positive way. The United Way has the support of so many people and organizations. I'm really excited about this next phase of our campaign," said English.
