MARTINSVILLE -- Three local golfers traveled to Martinsville over the weekend with hopes of advancing in the state tournament. Unfortunately, the trio saw their quest fall short, but capped their season in strong fashion.

South Putnam's Heather Hughes led the Putnam County charge finishing just five shots from advancing with an 89. She posted an impressive 45 on the front nine and finished strong as she dropped a stroke on the back for her tally of 85.

"Heather played very well," Eagles head coach Debbie Steffy said. "She started the day with two double bogeys and then got on track."

Chelsea Samuels of Greencastle had a solid round going after carding a 46 on the front nine, but she encountered some problems on the back. On the par five 10th, she recorded a 9 and did so again on the par four 15th. Despite those two holes, Samuels finished with a 51, including a par. She finished the day with a 97.

"I was pleased with how Chelsea played,"?GHS head coach Brad Kingma said. "She drove the ball well all day and handled the greens.

"This should give her a good foundation to build on for next year," he added.

It was a rough day for Cloverdale's Kayla Langdon. She posted a 49 on the back nine, but not before carding a 56 to begin her day. She had to eights and a 10 on the front nine and leveled out on the back nine en route to her 105.

Martinsville finished first at the regional posting a 326 and West Central Conference golfer Julia Porter advanced as an individual after scoring an 84 on the day.
