Tiger Cubs fall to Warriors in five games

Tuesday, September 30, 2008

The Greencastle volleyball team roared out to an early lead Monday night with wins in the first two games, but they were unable to hold on. The Tiger Cubs dropped the next three games to take a five-game loss to Danville, 19-25, 15-25, 25-19, 25-19, 15-10.

Greencastle starters against Danville were: senior Brooke Lewis; juniors Jordyn Lewis and Kayla Nobles; sophomores Kelsey Grzesiek, Mallory Miller, and Chelsea Samuels.

In the first game, Greencastle was able to develop an early 7-3 lead due in large part to Samuels' serving. The Tiger Cubs continued to play well, using their teamwork to continue leading over the Warriors. The match came to 19-13 in Greencastle's favor and it stayed that way until the end. However, Danville did manage to earn points due to several long volleys, some which worked in their favor. The match came to an end with the Tiger Cubs winning 25-19.

In the second game, Greencastle was, once again, able to use their great serving and their teamwork to build a 10-0 lead early on. Danville was able to rally a few points bring the match to 13-7, but Greencastle was too strong and not ready to give up their lead. The Tiger Cubs were able to finish the match 25-15.

The third game was where things began to change for both teams. Danville was the one with the early 8-1 lead. However, the Tiger Cubs were not willing to throw in the towel just yet. They rallied back bringing the game to 10-9 in Danville's favor. But there was no stopping the Warriors. They extended their lead to 18-12 but Greencastle wasn't quite done yet and rallied once again to 20-17. However, the Warriors were too much and were able to win 25-19.

The fourth game was more of the same. Danville took an early 6-2 lead due to mistakes by the Tiger Cubs. The Warriors continued to build their lead to 17-12. Greencastle had many opportunities to earn points but were not able to monopolize on them. However, Greencastle seemed to come alive in the middle of the match and used more of the teamwork that helped them win the first two matches, but it wasn't quite enough. Danville was able to overtake them once again 25-19.

The fifth and final game was the most eventful of the night. Danville took the early lead once again, but Greencastle was not going to let them take the game without a fight. They came back and tied the game 9-9. The Tiger Cubs used more of the hard work and teamwork, but they needed to communicate in order to overcome the Warriors. Danville took the lead and didn't look back. They defeated Greencastle 15-10.

Tiger Cub Coach Trish Lowe had mixed feelings about tonight's game.

"I am happy with the way that we played tonight, using our skills and working as a team," Lowe said. "However, we need to realize that we can't get down on ourselves and that mistakes will be made, but we have to go on and continue playing instead of getting down on ourselves and letting our mistakes effect the way we play the rest of the game."

  • Working as a TEAM? With 3 girls that hardly played? One freshman didn't play a single point, the other played maybe 5 or 6 and one sophmore sat three games. Oh yeah and still lost. I guess it would be different if they were winning.

The second games serving was Mallory Miller by the way. Ten points in a row, I think she deserves to at least have her name mentioned.
