Traditions surround homecoming week

Juniors Kate Babington and Hilary Scroeder were dressed as unidentified super heroes Thursday at Greencastle High School. Students dressed in different outfits all week long in honor of homecoming this Friday at the school.

Greencastle High School's homecoming kicked off earlier this week with students dressing up on Wednesday as nerds and Thursday as super heroes. Friday is purple and gray day.

Students also showed their spirit building floats and attending a bonfire on Thursday night at the school.

Assistant Principal Russ Hesler, while at a wrestling meet in Kentucky, saw some banners that a school had mounted and thought it would be a good idea for the high school.

Chris Beck, Duke Energy hung new Tiger Cub banners at the high school recently. Assistant Principal Russ Hesler, Jim Headley with Headley's Hardware and Dixie Choppers Eric Bernsee gave direction to Beck from below.

Together with Dan Green, who is in charge of transportation at the school, he put together a group to make "Welcome to Greencastle High School, Home of the Tiger Cubs" banners.

Chris Beck with Duke Energy, Jim Headley with Headley Hardware and Dawn Holmes with Dixie Chopper donated time and materials to the project. The Purple and Gray banners are now hanging on light posts all around the school.

Alumni Kim and Pam Perkins donated the 60 purple and white mums, which were planted by a group of students overseen by Terry Collins, Diane Pierce and Denise Sigworth. The group spent an afternoon cleaning, planting and mulching the flowerbeds at the front of the school.

"I think the front entrance looks as good as it ever has," added Hesler.

Art teacher Robin Johnson with the school's art club, and in particular Senior Jennifer Grumme, painted 16-foot tiger paws at three of the entrances to the school.

"We want things to look good for all the alumni who will be here for homecoming," said Hesler.

There will be an alumni tent at the football game against Cascade Friday night at 7 p.m. The classes of 1988 and 1998 will have reunions this year.

The Homecoming parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday prior to the game. It starts at the Bus Barn, heads downtown to the square and ends up at the school.

The Booster Club is taking part in the festivities by sponsoring a spirit night at the game.

They have asked students to dress in vintage uniforms. Whoever has the best costume will win either a pizza or wings.
