CHS falls to Patriots

Saturday, October 11, 2008

SPENCER -- The Cloverdale Clovers football team traveled to Spencer Friday night to play the Owen Valley Patriots, knowing that the long rivalry between the two schools would play a large part in the outcome of the game.

The Clovers have also been decimated by injuries this season with using many freshman players in key positions on both offense and defense.

Cloverdale played a solid game, but Owen Valley's experience proved too much for the Clovers, as the Patriots won the game, 47-15.

The game was much closer than the final score indicated, as the Clovers' offense only generated 148 less yards in total offense than Owen Valleys', but the Patriots' special teams made key plays that greatly affected the outcome of the game.

In the first quarter, Owen Valley returned two punts for touchdowns, and in the second quarter, the Patriots returned a kickoff to the Clovers' 11 yard line after Cloverdale's first score of the game. On the next play from scrimmage, Owen Valley scored its fourth touchdown of the game.

Minus those scores by Owen Valley's special teams units, the Clovers would have lost the game by a score of 26-15, versus the 47-15 final outcome.

"We've been fighting tooth and nail to get 11 guys on the field this time of the year due to injuries, "Cloverdale head coach Kyle Winkler said following the game.

"My hat goes off to Owen Valley because they were able to do the things that we wanted to do."

"We need to keep our heads high and get ready for North Putnam next week," Winkler concluded.

Sam Spinks gained 57 yards on 12 carries to lead the Clovers in rushing. Jordan Brinkman followed with 52 yards on five carries, Zack Couse had 41 on two carries, and Zak Osburn had 23 yards on five rushes.

Brinkman was 6-for-19 in passing for 93 yards, hitting Trevor Lockwood with four passes for 36 yards and Osburn with two passes for 57 yards.

As a team, Cloverdale gained 264 yards in total offense compared to Owen Valley's 412 yards.

The Clovers (2-6, 1-4 WCC) host North Putnam in the final regular season game of the season Friday night. The game begins at 7 p.m.
