Lloyd Richard Shamel, 86, of Brazil and formerly of Greencastle, died on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008.

Mr. Shamel was born on Oct. 23, 1921 in Greencastle to Edgar and Mabel Lawton Shamel.

He retired from Conrail Railroad as a signalman with 42 years of service, which began with the New York Central Railroad.

He was a member of Zorah Shrine Temple in Terre Haute and the Oriental Shrine Band.

His parents; a son, Richard Shamel; granddaughter, Kimberly Shamel; sisters, Rachel O' Neal and Marjorie Beason; and two infant brothers preceded him in death.

Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Mary; children, Rebecca Hughes and Mark of Brazil, Jim Shamel and Edna of Greencastle, Carolyn Hughes of Texas, Brenda Gooch and Steve of Crawfordsville, James Mackey and Diane of Greencastle and Marcia Frost and Bill of Tennessee; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008 at 1 p.m. at Bittles & Hurt Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 11 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
