School struggles to find math and science teachers

Cloverdale Superintendent Carrie Milner says chemistry and math teachers are "tough to get" these days. It seems people in these particular subjects do not go into or stay in teaching.

Linda Mann, school board member, asked, "Does the state have a plan for public schools to obtain chemistry and math teachers?"

"No," Milner said.

Creative thinking and scouting colleges seems to be the plan for Cloverdale to get the help they need.

The resignation of Amanda Roberts, middle school student council sponsor, was approved by the board.

New personnel include Isabell Hess as the new afternoon pre-school teaching assistant; Megan Lewis, out of district special education teaching assistant; and Heather Nees as the middle school student council sponsor.

Christian Frye will be reclassified as the licensed supervised teacher at the high school. Kelly Monnett will be moved from part time to full time in the pre-school.

Cloverdale High School has a new coach. Matthew Langdon was approved to be coach of junior varsity girls basketball team. Middle school coaches include Kyle McCammon, fifth grade boys basketball; Traci Toney, sixth grade boys basketball; Jeff Gibboney, seventh grade boys basketball; Jared Briles, eighth grade boys basketball; Shannon Lyons, fifth grade girls basketball; Ed Stevens, sixth grade girls basketball; Katie McLaughlin, seventh grade girls basketball; and Billy Boyette, eighth grade girls basketball.

The gym floor has been completed. The board will be planning a walk-thru in the near future. Dan Sulkoske said the tile in the vestibule, which is located off the gym, is now in need of repair. The tile was damaged during the installation of the gym floor. CDI Engineering estimated the cost of repairs to be $463. The board decided it would be more cost efficient to have needed repairs done in-house.

The band was recognized for their outstanding performance during competition. Competition band is a volunteer program that included 30 Cloverdale students. The group earned top overall in their class among several other achievements.

There are extra fifth and sixth grade desks to be auctioned. The date for the auction has not been set.
