Club celebrates 50 years

Sunday, November 2, 2008

Support. Friendship.

These are a couple of words that describe what Putnam County's Better Homes Extension Homemakers Club is all about.

More than 25 women gathered Sunday at the Bainbridge Community Center to commemorate the club's 50th anniversary.

It is more than just a club to the women. When times were tough, they were there for each other to provide help, laughter and knowledge.

Lessons are given at each monthly meeting. They include topics such as food preservation, etiquette and moles.

It all began with Evelyn Baldwin and Mildred Cassady who organized the Better Homes group in July of 1958.

At the beginning, the club had seven charter members. Today, the group has approximately 19 members.

Mavis Hendrich was the first president in 1958. The first county president was Betty McFarland, in 1965.

Better Homes Extension Homemakers group meets once a month at various places.
