New judge appointed in theft case

Saturday, November 15, 2008

No new sentencing date has been set for a Greencastle woman accused of stealing funds from the accountant she worked for.

Tamera S. Wade, 45, was charged with Class D felony theft and surrendered herself to the court on Sept. 16. She entered a guilty plea to the charge the next day, and was released on her own recognizance. Her sentencing was set for Oct. 16.

Wade admitted taking the funds during an interview with Indiana State Police Detective Scott Stockton in early August, court records said.

On Sept. 30, Judge Matthew Headley recused himself from the case and requested that Judge Thomas Milligan of Montgomery County Circuit Court assume jurisdiction. At that time, the sentencing was taken off the court calendar, court documents said.

Several days later, Milligan accepted the case, which will still be heard in Putnam County Circuit Court. Milligan has yet to set a new sentencing date.

The exact amount of money Wade is accused of stealing from her employer, Edward Wood & Co. Inc. of Greencastle, has not been revealed, although Stockton said it was "significant."

Putnam County Prosecutor Tim Bookwalter said it was safe to say Wade was accused of stealing several thousand dollars.

Wade had been employed by Wood & Co. since 1988. She was terminated on July 28.

Wade has no prior criminal record.

  • Recent history shows that if you pay the money back real quick, and do not deny any wrong doing, she can easily get a light sentence.

  • I disagree, Xgamer. I suspect she will get a far harsher sentence than Frisbee- even though she didn't steal federal funds and the dollar amount was likely far less- just wait and see! (That is, IF the Banner does a follow-up story.)

  • Apparently it was over $100,000. I would classify that as significant.

  • Good people do bad things. Remember, those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. I'm just saying that there are always two sides to every story.

And to all of you who insist on bashing the banner graphic: do everyone a favor and just stop reading it. keep your negative, nasty comments to yourself. there is enough of that in this world. comment on a story? fine. offer constructive criticism? great. but for the love of all that is good and pure, get a life and read a different paper instead of just B*@&$&%*@# about this one.

  • It should not matter if they were classmates or not....Now if they were family i would understand. Headley knew that taking that position he would know quite of few people that he would have to deal with since this is such a small community!!!!!!Why he has to do this all the time......WHO KNOW'S

  • The way I see it the former Sheriff did not line is pockets with the $12,000- the person named here did fill her pockets with nearly $200,000. In the end we are all paying for her overflowing pockets- the accountant was insured for only $100,000- that other $100,000 has to come from somewhere. So, if you think your not paying- think again! If anyone needs to go to prison for theft- I think we have found the perfect candidate.

  • Somehow, all the money has been paid back. That is good for the people at that firm. That has to be devestating to the person who paid it back, which i am sure it wasnt the one that took it. Thank You and Sorry for U.

Has anyone thought what if Headley didnt like what the lawyers and friends and politics is trying to get for this offender? what if they are trying to wipe it under the table and give her probation and he doesnt agree with it? The outcome of this trial should be a stunner no matter which way it goes. Sorry to say i wouldnt want anything to do with it either.
