Michael sworn in at Statehouse
INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana House Democrats welcomed State Rep. Nancy Michael (D-Greencastle) as part of their freshman class of legislators during a ceremony held Tuesday at the Statehouse.
The newly elected lawmaker was sworn in as part of the proceedings of Organization Day, the ceremonial first meeting day of the legislative session. Michael will begin her official duties as state representative when the legislature reconvenes in early January.
"I'm entering the political fray during a critical time in Indiana," Michael said. "Our state faces real economic challenges, and all lawmakers will have to be prudent in crafting a balanced, responsible state budget and developing ways to bring jobs to struggling areas."
She continued, "I will be diligent in fighting for the interests of District 44, and promise to be open and honest with constituents about the work state lawmakers are doing on their behalf."
Michael has spent 21 years as a public servant. After receiving her management degree from Indiana University, she served as Putnam County Clerk, Putnam County Councilwoman and three-term mayor of Greencastle. Her accomplishments include bringing high-speed internet to Greencastle, building a wastewater treatment plant and helping to establish a local Ivy Tech campus.
"House Democrats are very fortunate to have someone as skilled and accomplished as Rep. Michael to join our ranks," said House Speaker B. Patrick Bauer. "Her insight will be invaluable as we tackle very complicated issues in 2009."
Michael indicated that her top priorities will be expanding economic opportunities in District 44, supporting an education system that prepares students for success in the workforce and developing a fair and equitable property tax system. She and her husband Steve have two children, Peter and Mary.
