North Putnam places fifth in tourney

BAINBRIDGE -- The North Putnam wrestling team hosted the Cougar Six-way Wrestling Tourney on Saturday. The Cougars finished the day with a 1-4 record and two individual champions.

Tyler Ruble (103) and Dustin Vires (215) went 5-0 on the day en route to their individual accolades. Joe Mindiola and Randy Soriano wrestled their way to second place finishes and Tommy Welch was third in his weight class.

In round one, North Putnam defeated Owen Valley 42-27. In addition to Ruble and Vires, Dillon Bailey (119), Stacy Hensley (135), Welch (140), Madison McClellen (145), Keegan Foltz (160) and Soriano (189) all received wins.

Things got tight in round two, as the Cougars and Rockville ended in a tie and had to go to a tiebreaker. Unfortunately for North Putnam the tiebreaker went in favor of Rockville 37-36. Joe Mindiola (125), Hensley (135), Welch (140) and Soriano (189), as well as Ruble and VIres, all picked up wins.

Chatard got the better of the Cougars in round three, but five North Putnam wrestlers posted wins. Ruble (103), Mindiola (125), Welch (140) Soriano (189) and VIres (215) accounted for the wins.

North Putnam managed three wins against tournament winner Greenfield Central. Ruble (103), Mindiola (125) and Vires (215) won in the Cougars' 60-18 loss.

The Cougars had a strong showing against Gibson Southern in the fifth round of Saturday's tourney. Ruble (103), Mindiola (125), Nunez (130), Soriano (189) and Vires (215) all received wins in the round.

North Putnam will next compete in the Putnam County Tournament at Cloverdale Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
