The Putnam County Museum will name the "Greatest Sports Legend of Putnam County" on Jan. 17.

Putnam County residents are invited to vote for their favorite sports legend by casting a ballot at the museum. Votes can also be mailed to 1105 N. Jackson St., Greencastle, IN 46135 or e-mailed to museum2@co.putnam.in.us

Nominees for the honor are Lisa Allen, Jeff Blue, Jana Braden, Jona Braden, Brian Bridgewater, Bruce Bridgewater, Wayne Bright, Archie Chadd, Chet Clodfelter, Joe Franklin, Rick Ford, Jess McAnally, Ray Sears, Larry Steele, Chad Tucker and Denise Weinhoeft. Write-in votes will also be permitted.

Ballots must be submitted by Jan. 14.

The contest is being held in conjunction with the museum's sports exhibit, which features memorabilia, uniforms, photos, scrapbooks and artifacts from all Putnam County schools sports programs, covering many decades. Voters are invited to tour the exhibit when they cast their ballots.

The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The museum is located just north of downtown Greencastle at 1105 N. Jackson St.

A special museum event is also planned for Jan. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon, when former Banner Graphic sports editor Steve Fields will host the first in a series of presentations of his favorite Putnam County sports memories.

Fields' first presentation will spotlight the award-winning 1982 Cloverdale boys' basketball team and the 1988 Greencastle boys' basketball team.

The winner of the Greatest Sports Legend contest will be announced at the Jan. 17 event, which will focus on area volleyball and track teams.

Fields will moderate conversations with former coaches and players. Programs will include videos, photos and lots of nostalgia.
