Rebuilding Together accepting applications for 2009 project

Tuesday, December 16, 2008

Rebuilding Together Owen Putnam is now accepting applications for houses of veterans in need of repairs beyond what can be accomplished on their own.

The need is great and "help is out there," said Steve Newland, RTOP board chairman.

The Owen/Putnam chapter of the national organization is looking to again take on five projects the last Saturday in April 2009. Home improvements range from installing handicap accessible ramps to roof replacement, siding and some remodeling.

Last year, Rebuilding Together was able to accomplish five projects with the help of 60 volunteers.

"It takes a lot of organization to make sure everyone works together and projects are completed in one day," said Newland.

To cover repair costs, RTOP has received generous grants from Lowe's Home Improvement in the amount of $10,000; Greencastle Christian Church in the amount of $10,000 to $12,000; and Putnam County Community Foundation in the amount of $3,000.

While the emphasis this year is to help veterans, senior citizens may also apply. Anyone wanting to be considered by RTOP can call Steve Newland, board chairman, at 653-5816 or e-mail at steven@greencastlecc.org. Applicants must own their home.

Friends and family members can submit applications on behalf of someone who may qualify for a 2009 RTOP project.

Rebuilding Together is a community-based, nonprofit organization with volunteers who fix up homes of elderly citizens in Owen and Putnam counties.

Its Web site states, "Rebuilding Together believes the disabled and elderly should be allowed to remain in their own homes whenever possible."
