Eagles drop to 2-5 with loss

Saturday, December 20, 2008

SPEEDWAY -- The South Putnam Eagles basketball team went looking to end their losing streak Friday night. But, they found their desires would not be answered as the host Speedway Sparkplugs took a lead midway in the first quarter and were never caught.

The Plugs got away with 56-45 victory in the boys' game of the doubleheader.

The Eagles were never counted out until very late in the game as they made several runs to cut the difference to 4 and 5 points late in the third period and a couple of times early in the fourth quarter.

Only, when they relaxed even a little the, the Plugs would be out to a 9- or 10-point lead once again.

A couple of times during the fourth the South cut the lead down to four points with a couple of quick buckets, but a quick shot to cut it to two points fell off the goal no-good.

Another Sparkplug run, however, pushed the game out of reach.

The teams finished off the contest swapping buckets with the hosts winning at 56 to 45.

The teams were "allowed" to play a pretty physical and fast pace throughout the game with only 10 fouls called against the Sparkplugs and nine against the visiting South Putnam crew.

Conor Frame led the Eagles with 11 points, while Cameron Chestnut was just behind with 10.

Play was quite fast paced and somewhat ragged in ballhandling area. Both teams did not shoot for a real good average but played fairly equal in rebounds, and in handling errors.

South Putnam's record is now 2-5 on the season. The Eagles host North Vermillion in the first round of their holiday tournament at 7:45 p.m. on Jan. 2
