Harold Eugene Mendenhall, age 82, of New Winchester died Jan. 1, 2009.

He was born Sept. 17, 1926 in Bloomingdale to Frank and Anna Copner Mendenhall. He married Patricia Fuller April 23, 1949 and she preceded him in death on Jan. 23, 2001.

Mr. Mendenhall attended school in Bloomingdale but was drafted into the U.S. Army prior to graduation. He served his country two years in Japan before being honorably discharged due to being wounded, causing him to lose a leg. He was a job setter at Allison Division of General Motors for 30 years, retiring in 1981. He lived on his small farm in New Winchester for 52 years, enjoying his hobbies of golfing, hunting, fishing and woodworking.

Survivors include his children, Jeff Mendenhall of Greencastle, Joe Mendenhall of New Winchester and Jan Hopper and Jill Davitto, both of Brownsburg; brothers John Mendenhall of New Winchester, Robert Mendenhall of Brownsburg, Jack Mendenhall of Roachdale and Melvin Mendenhall of Friendswood, Texas; sister Loretta Botkin of Edinburgh; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers Bill and Elvin Mendenall and sisters Mary Phillips and Betty Fellows.

Funeral services will be at noon on Monday, Jan. 5 in Weaver and Randolph Funeral Home with Burial in New Winchester Cemetery. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
