WGRE helping out Senior Center

Friday, January 9, 2009

DePauw radio station WGRE will be selling raffle tickets during the DePauw men's and women's basketball games this weekend and next at the Lilly Center to raise money for the Putnam County Senior Center.

Raffle tickets cost $1 and can be purchased during the games. Prizes include gift cards to Almost Home, Toppers, Final Approach, McDonalds, Sonic and others.

The DePauw men will play at 6 p.m. and the women at 8 p.m. Friday night against Birmingham Southern University at the Lilly Center. On Sunday the men will play at 1 p.m. and the women at 3 p.m. against Rhodes College.

WGRE 91.5 FM is run by DePauw University students. They choose a local organization yearly as their philanthropy.

"I thought of the Senior Center because of the economic crisis. I know more and more people are turning toward them for help," said Radio Station WGRE Student Promotions Director Anne Whistler.

"A group of us met Jim Stevens (Senior Center Director) over there and toured the center. Donations to them help provide gas money to take people to see the doctor, toys for tots, help for the food bank and a lot of other services," added Whistler.

"Most of us didn't know how much the Senior Center does for the community. That visit kind of lit a fire under us and got us going," she said.

Prizewinners will be announced at the end of each game both weekends. Those who can't attend the games can tune in to WGRE to hear the broadcast and find out who the raffle winners will be.
