Wilda Vass Neely Skidmore

Wilda Vass Neely Skidmore, 90, of Hanover, formerly of Greencastle, died Monday Jan. 19, 2009 at her residence.

She was born Nov. 19, 1918 in Georgetown to Ernest A. and Frances Hottell Vass. She resided for many years in Floyd County and was a 1937 graduate of New Albany High School. She was employed from 1958 to 1980 with the Floyd County School system and served as secretary and assistant to the superintendent. She married Richard S. "Dick" Skidmore on July 17, 1982 in New Albany and he survives.

Mrs. Skidmore was a member of Civil War roundtables, holding memberships in the Jefferson county chapter, the Louisville chapter and the West Central chapter in Greencastle. She was a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Madison. She enjoyed walking, exercising, traveling, reading, music and Civil War history.

Survivors include her husband; daughter Janice Anderson of Floyds Knobs; son Michael Neely and wife Phyllis of Floyds Knobs; step daughter Kathryn Skidmore of Bloomington; brother Rev. Calvin Vass of Clifford; grandchildren Kathryn "Kate" Burger and husband Brent, Brad Habermel, Benjamin Habermel, Michael Neely, Shannon Neely and Timothy Neely; great grandchildren Kristen Burger, Jordan Burger and Marissa Habermel; step grandson Gregory Harris; sisters-in-law Ruby Vass of New Albany and Marianne Hocking of Fowler; sever nieces and nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Ernest A. Vass Jr. and son-in-law Ross Anderson.

Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Madison with Rev. John A. Meyer and Rev. Calvin Vass officiating. Burial will be at Hanover Cemetery.

Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Morgan and Nay Funeral Centre in Madison and from 10 a.m. until the time of mass at the church on Saturday. Prayer service will be Friday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
