North Putnam swimmers host Cascade and Covenant Christian

ROACHDALE -- Thursday night, the North Putnam swimmers hosted Cascade and Covenant Christian in a triangular meet. The girls' score for the evening was Cascade 135, Covenant Christian 101, and North Putnam 80. The boys' score was Cascade 122, North Putnam 115, and Covenant Christian 20.

North Putnam boys held on to the lead until the 200 Free Relay when Cascade passed them by two points. They then continued to hold the lead up through the last event, the 400 Free Relay resulting in a win of seven points.

Coach Wesley Richardson said, " I am pleased with how the meet went tonight. Our swimmers did an excellent job and I was pleased with the enthusiasm they showed. It was a team effort tonight."

One exciting event on the evening was the boys 500 freestyle. North Putnam senior, Cody Paul, swam the 500 for the first time competitively. Some of the enthusiasm noted above was shown when not only the North Putnam swimmers and fans, but everyone in the natatorium began cheering for Cody.

"I am very proud of how he (Cody) performed tonight. He was really tired when he got out of the water, but he pulled through and was able to come up at the end too. I am very pleased with him, and he should be as well," stated Coach Richardson.

Even though the North Putnam teams did not come in first, the swim meet went very well. It was a big celebration since it was senior night, and "everyone [had] a personal best," said Coach Richardson.

Seniors honored were Brianna Smith, Rachel Smith, C.J. Werner, Cody Paul, Jon and Jeff Taggart.

Firsts for the Lady Cougars came in the 500 freestyle, swam by Michelle Harper in a time of 6:35.84. Her closest competitor came from Cascade's Abby Toole coming in 10 seconds behind Harper.

Firsts for the North Putnam boys included the 200 Medley Relay of Colton Smith, Justin Zurawski, Jon Taggart, and Jeremy Ban in a time of 1:56.37, the 200 Freestyle Relay of Jon Taggart, Hunter Logan, C.J. Werner, and Ban with a time of 1:39.30, and the 400 Freestyle Relay of Jon Taggart, Werner, Smith, and Logan in a time of 3:57.47.

Individual winners included many of those who were also on relays. Smith in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:11.99, Jon Taggart in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:06.80, Ban in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.19, and Zurawski in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:13.12.

The Cougars will travel to North Vermillion Tuesday at 6 p.m.
