Indianapolis--Putnam County Council member Opal Sutherlin and Treasurer-elect Sharon Owens recently attended the Association of Indiana Counties Newly Elected Officials seminar at the Crowne Plaza in Indianapolis.

About 150 county elected officials from all over the state attended the conference. Seminar training included topics such as an overview of the Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF), tax and assessment issues, main revenue sources and debt financing, purchasing and public bidding, employee/employer issues, State Board of Accounts overview and the basics of county budgeting.

Sutherlin and Owens were also able to meet with their affiliate associations during one of the breakout sessions.

AIC Legislative staff also briefed the new officials on 2009 legislation that will impact county government. In 2008, the Indiana General Assembly passed 55 bills that impact the operations of county government.
