United Way of Putnam County exceeds goal by 10 percent

Wednesday, January 28, 2009

United Way of Putnam County not only met its goal of raising $160,000 but exceeded it by ten percent and possibly more.

"The goal was rather modest, but in light of the economic situation it is significant to note that it was not only met, but exceeded," said United Way of Putnam County Executive Director David English.

"Every penny collected is valued to the utmost. We will be only as strong as the community allows us to be. Even though the goal is met, it is not too late to still contribute. Remember 97 to 98 percent of what is raised stays in Putnam County," he noted.

English is particularly proud, as Putnam County is one of only six Indiana counties to meet their goals so far this year and one of two to exceed them. In fact, Putnam County has the highest percentage to date with 110 percent.

According to English, many people and corporations are responsible for exceeding the goal in this campaign.

"Putnam County Hospital ran a tremendous campaign, raising nearly $10,000," said English.

Other stars among contributors to this year's corporate campaign are Wal-Mart, Buzzi Unicem-USA, Charming Shops, Heartland Automotive and Old National Bank.

Many more businesses contributed to the organization meeting its goal. They include Furniture Aware House, Cunningham's State Farm Insurance, National City Bank, Almost Home/ Final Approach Bistro, Cash Concrete, First National Bank, Hammer & Company, International Automotive, HBG Insurance, Mikey's Tobacco Shop and York Family Auto.

"I am very, very pleased with the whole community. We all need to be proud," added English.

The United Way of Putnam County supports 15 member agencies.

As the economy worsens and people tighten their belts, the demand for United Way Agency services continues to rise.

"Our county social service agencies will feel the financial crunch created by the economic uncertainties, and will need our help more so now than at times of prosperity," commented English.

These same agencies are facing cuts from federal and state funding programs and are relying on the generosity of the community in which they operate.

"We would see a significant decrease in the number of programs we provide like our Coats for Kids program in Putnam County that was able to provide almost 700 coats this year," said Youth Development Services Executive Director Linda Merkel.

English encourages employers and individuals to call the United Way of Putnam County to discuss where funding goes and how it helps the entire community.

"Now it is time to turn our eyes to the future, If anyone has a question about the operation of the United Way, a desire to volunteer, donate or establish an ongoing contribution through the Putnam County Foundation's various giving programs, come see us," added English.

Donations can still be made by calling 653-5638 or by mailing them to the United Way of Putnam County at 2 S. Jackson Street, Greencastle.
