Cloverdale water rates may go up

Friday, February 13, 2009

CLOVERDALE -- Water customers in the Town of Cloverdale may soon see an extra dollar or two on their monthly water bill.

Since the last rate change adopted in July 1998, town council has found the rates and charges established by that ordinance are insufficient.

According to Ordinance No. 2009-2, the town is unable to properly operate its waterworks plant; service its bonds; and finance additions and improvements under the 1998 ordinance.

A rate study was completed by O.W. Krohn & Associates in Westfield and based upon that study, town council finds certain rates and charges should be increased.

Rates are expected to climb 3 percent beginning March 1 and continue through four phases until January 2013. Ordinance No. 2009-2, which establishes rates and charges for services rendered by the waterworks, was introduced at the Feb. 10 town council meeting.

Any property owners, ratepayers and other interested parties served by the waterworks of Cloverdale are encouraged to attend the public hearing at 7 p.m. Feb. 24 at Town Hall.

  • Honestly, raising the rates? The water in Cloverdale is already higher than in Greencastle, and there aren't nearly as many people here (I have lived both places). You go to Greencastle and things are less expensive there (mainly everything: from food to gasoline to utilities), so how does that make sense with supply and demand curves? It doesn't. Maybe it isn't the price of utilities, but the less-than-frugal spending of the local government. I hope that there is a cutback on township government (source: Ch.13, L. Clutter).

  • *

Cloverdale supplies pre-softened water. The price of salt has gone through the roof in the past few years.

  • Is that going to be 3% every phase for a total of 12%?

tjchopper - Mine averages $55 a month for one person. If I multiply it by 3 that would be $165 for three people here in Cloverdale.

  • Fillmore is not the place to live!! Our town board sends people a shut off notice if your behind and then get a raise. Their time is valuable and the fact my water bill has been 170.00 for 4 people thats nuts. You better go to that meeting and speak up!!!
