Theft defendant changes plea

Friday, February 20, 2009

A Cloverdale man pled guilty on Thursday for his role in an October robbery.

Jared T. Robbins, 21, will be sentenced March 19 on a Class C felony charge of conspiracy to commit burglary. Under the terms of a plea agreement, charges of Class C felony burglary and Class D felony theft will be dropped.

In court Thursday, Robbins admitted to breaking into a shed on a private property in Cloverdale with the intent to steal two all-terrain vehicles. Robbins will face a minimum two-year sentence for the felony conviction, which cannot be suspended because he has a prior felony conviction in Marion County.

Judge Matthew Headley could sentence Robbins to a maximum of eight years.

Robbins has been in jail since his arrest on Oct. 14. He has been unable to post 10 percent of a $30,000 bond, which was set the same day.

Robbins was arrested after he and another man allegedly broke into a neighbor's pole barn and stole two all-terrain vehicles.

Robbins' co-defendant, Justin Manning, 22, pled guilty to Class D felony theft on Jan. 26 in connection with the incident. In exchange, two Class C felony counts -- burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary -- against Manning were dropped.

As part of his plea agreement, Manning also agreed to cooperate in the prosecution of Robbins.

Manning is currently on probation in Hendricks County. Once his case is resolved in Hendricks County, he will be brought back to Putnam County for sentencing.
