Banner plans to make every page count

Monday, March 9, 2009

The Banner Graphic is joining the "green" bandwagon and inviting the community to join in. Beginning next week, a large Paper Retriever container will be available in the Banner parking lot.

All your newspapers, magazines, office and school papers, folders, fax paper, shopping catalogs and mail can be placed in the container for recycling. All funds earned from recycling will go to the Putnam County Humane Society.

Papers can be shredded, but not too finely. The key to remember for shredding paper according to Paper Retriever is "spaghetti not confetti."

No plastic, glass, metals or trash will be accepted. This is a paper only recycling program.

Paper placed in the Retriever bin is sent directly to paper mills and is remanufactured into newsprint within a few weeks of collection. Paper Retriever is the global leader in the manufacturing and recycling of newsprint.

Last year, non-profit organizations raised over a quarter of a million dollars for community outreach programs and recycled more than 15,000 tons.

There are great benefits to the environment and community by recycling. It helps reduce landfill use and saves water and energy.

Recycling programs like this one promote environmental stewardship and education through recycling and environmental activities.

For information about bringing your papers to the Banner Graphic bin call 653-5151.

  • Recycling is something that EVERYONE should do.

It's easy, & when you see how much you trash you keep from being dumped in landfills,

    it'll shock you...

Donating the proceeds to the Humane Society is an outstanding gesture- the unwanted pets in our community need this support & more!!

Greencastle needs to strive to establish the means to recycle glass, metals, & plastics- there are other charities that could benefit from such a program, although the Humane Society is my top choice. In the meantime, I will continue to take my recycleables (other than paper) to drop off on my way to work in Indy.

Way to step up Banner Graphic!!!

  • I recycle regulary. I would take it to your recycle bin if it was not for you donating it to the the Putnam County Humane Society. In my opinion there are more important places to donate to OTHER than the Putnam County Humane Society

  • I think that is a great idea to support the humane shelter but, I would like to see support for the County Home. With the way things are going with the ecomony and folks being out of work I would hate to see it close. I have often wondered why men are not taken there instead of the Homeless shelter which is suppose to be for women with children.Especially men with medical problems where there are staff that can help them get resources they need.People have needs too.

  • Supporting the Humane Society is a win-win decision for the community - whether you love animals or not. It keeps the animals off the streets & keeps them from being dumped on doorsteps, especially those of Veterinarians, pet stores and other business trying to survive.
