GMS wins county swim titles

The Greencastle Middle School swim teams held court Tuesday at North Putnam during the Putnam County Junior High Meet.

Greencastle finished first in 10 of the 12 events en route to scoring 153 points, for the championship. North Putnam finished second with 119 points while South Putnam finished third with 69 points.

Leading the Greencastle team was Alex Asbell, who finished first in two individual events and was part of the 200 and 400-freestyle relay teams that finished first. Asbell won the 200-yard freestyle event with a time of 2:17.74 and the 100-yard freestyle in 1:01.18.

Also winning multiple single events was Nash Firebaugh who won the 100-yard IM with a time of 1:11.47 and the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 27.95. Firebaugh was also part of the 200-yard medley relay team that finished first with a time of 2:08:14 and the 400 relay team with Asbell, Elijah Brattain and Riley Boswell.

Jacob Hendershot and Zach Moore were the first place finishers for the Cougars. Hendershot won the 100-yard breaststroke with a record time of 1:21.93, while Moore set a new diving record with a score of 152.55.

For South Putnam, it was Tayler Arnold who had the only first place finish for team. He won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:11.73.

In the girls' meet, Greencastle was crowned county champ with a score of 143 points, while North Putnam finished second with 102 points and South Putnam finished third with 74 points.

Greencastle had four first place finishes Tuesday. The 200-medley relay team of Emily Wheeler, Abigail Wilson, Rosio Gomez and Harriett Watson won with a time of 2:24.31

Haylie Romer won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:37.08, while Watson claimed the blue ribbon in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:09.60.

Wrapping up the first place finishes for Greencastle was the 400 freestyle relay team consisting of Romer, Rachel Custis, Gomez and Watson who won the race with a time of 4:51.96.

The Cougars had five first place finishes with Caroline Byrd and Halsey Foltz leading the team with two first place finishes each. Byrd won the 200 IM with a time of 1:12.77 and the 50 butterfly in 30.86. Foltz won the 50 freestyle in 28.53 and the 100 backstroke in 1:18.01. The 200 freestyle relay team consisting of Foltz, Byrd, Wilcox, Tia Scoggen earned the team its fifth victory of the night with a time of 2:02.49.

For the Eagles, it was Siera Heim that got the solo win for the team. She won the diving event. Her score was not given.
