Greencastle woman to be sentenced for theft

Friday, April 3, 2009

A Greencastle woman will be sentenced April 30 on a charge of Class D felony theft.

Under the terms of a plea agreement, Kelsey N. Patterson, 21, will plead guilty to that charge and three other charges -- two counts of Class C felony forgery and another count of Class D felony theft -- will be dismissed.

Sentencing will be up to the court's discretion. The maximum sentence for a Class D felony is three years.

According to court documents, Patterson is alleged to have used a checking account and credit card, both belonging to the same person, without authorization in early February 2008. An affidavit of probable cause said Patterson was recorded on video and in photographs at Teachers Credit Union in Greencastle cashing checks from the victim's account and using the victim's credit card.

Patterson allegedly took $445 in cash from the victim's checking account and made 57 purchases totaling $1,234.10 on the victim's credit card. Most of the credit card transactions were made at gas stations, convenience stores and fast food establishments, court documents said.

The affidavit of probable cause in the case was filed on April 4, 2008, but Patterson could not be located for some time. She was arrested on Oct. 30. She has been in jail since then, unable to post 10 percent of a $5,000 bond.

Patterson was also convicted in February 2008 of Class A misdemeanor possession of marijuana. She was given a one-year suspended sentence.
