DPU students open gallery

Friday, April 10, 2009

The Low Road Gallery, a non-profit contemporary art gallery, is set to open on April 11 at 7 p.m. Located at 104 Washington Ave., below Martin's Emporium, its hours of operation will be posted.

The inaugural opening will feature the show "Menagerie," an exhibition of sculptures, videos, and digital art by Matt Kalasky and Julie Rooney and is free and open to the public.

DePauw seniors Lukas Schooler and Julie Rooney decided to start a Greencastle gallery after they returned from studying abroad together at The Glasgow School of Art in Glasgow, Scotland.

Glasgow was peppered with art galleries, and there they saw firsthand how contemporary galleries provide an opportunity for local artists and art enthusiasts to actively participate in the larger art community.

Schooler and Rooney think that Greencastle residents should be able to be involved in contemporary art without having to travel long distances.

An interest meeting will be held on April 29 at 6 p.m. in the gallery to create a governing committee, which will curate shows, maintain the gallery and select artists via an application process.

This meeting is open to all, especially those who are interested in contemporary art in Greencastle. For more information contact Schooler at 812-371-2553.
