Eagles, Clovers clash with Patriots

SPENCER -- The South Putnam and Cloverdale High School track teams competed Wednesday night in a three-way match with Owen Valley.

The Patriots came out on top in the boys' and girls' meets, but Cloverdale placed second in both meets, while South Putnam came in third.

In the boys' meet, Cloverdale scored 56 points and had seven first-place finishes while the Eagles finished with 44.5 points and had three first-place finishers.

James Hinton led the Clovers with three blue ribbons. He won the long jump competition, jumping 20-feet-10.25-inches and the high jump clearing 5-feet-10-inches. His third win of the night came in the 300 meter hurdles. He won the event with a time of 43.04.

Two of the Eagles' wins came from Adam Masters. He won the discus with a toss of 130-feet-11-inches and the shot put, throwing 44-feet-3-inches. South Putnam's third win of the night came from Eric Drawbaugh in the pole vault. He cleared 9-feet for the win.

In the girls' meet, Cloverdale scored 52 points, while South Putnam scored 43 points.

Cloverdale had five first-place finishes, while the Lady Eagles had four.

Cloverdale was led by Mariah Oetken who won the 400 meter dash and the high jump. She finished the 400 in 1:07 and cleared 4-feet-6-inches in the high jump. Brooke Grey won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.37 while Cheatham won the shot put with a toss of 37-feet-7-inches. Holly McCammon came through for the Clovers in the 300 meter hurdles, winning with a time of 55.68

For the Lady Eagles, it was Rachel Egold and Leeah Butts who won the individual events. Egold won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:37 and Butts won the 100 meter dash with a time of 14.38. South Putnam's other two wins came from the 3,200 and the 1,600 meter relay teams. The 3,200 won with a time of 11:37 and the 1,600 ran a 4:57.

Cloverdale is back in action on Saturday when it takes part in the Mustang Invitational at Edgewood at 10 a.m. South Putnam is back in action on Thursday when it hosts Danville and Monrovia at 5 p.m.
