The South Putnam girls' tennis team dropped a close match to Southmont 3-2 Monday.

The Eagles' two wins came in its singles matches.

"Coming into this match, I knew it would be a close, competitive contest," South Putnam head coach Johnnie Briones said. "The rain may have slowed us down a little, but we need to step up our game every single night."

At No. 2 singles, Kendra Latham won the first set 6-2, but dropped her second set 4-6. Latham was able to regroup and take the third set 6-4 to win the match. Ashley Ross won the No. 3 singles match 1-6, 7-5 and 6-3.

"I'm proud of the No. 2 and 3 singles," Briones said. "Both played for nearly two-and-a-half hours. When they were down, they would battle back for the win."

The South Putnam junior varsity squad also won two matches on the night.

Allison Guthrie won the No. 2 singles match 8-5 and Jordyn Pitts picked up a win at No. 3 singles 8-1.
