LIZTON -- The South Putnam boys' golf team placed third in a tri-meet with Cloverdale at Tri-West. The Clovers won the event, nipping Tri-West 164-166, while the Eagles were third with a score of 182.

Cloverdale's Mike Wellington led all golfers with a low round of 38. Chris Arnold followed with a 40, Keith Hathorn a 42 and Gary Williams with a 44. Ryan Book carded a 52 and Sam Jordan added a 54.

"Mike finally broke through and had the kind of round we have been expecting," CHS head coach Doug Wokoun said. "Chris is in a little bit of a tough patch but battled his way through the round. Keith had his best competitive round and played the way we knew he was capable of playing. Gary is continuing to improve and had a good round, and will just get better."

For South Putnam, Alex Eickhoff led the way for the Eagles with a 41, followed by Dylan Gilbert with a 44 and Mike Nichols with a 47. Alex Kelly shot a 50 for SPHS, with Tyler Cox carding a 57.

Wokoun commended South Putnam's coach and the progress his Eagles' team is making.

"South played well and Coach McClure is bringing them around," Wokoun said. "They had some improved performances, and will continue to get better. South is a young group and will have some growing pains, but they are a promising squad with a good future."

Wokoun also commented that the road win will do more than just add to the team's win total.

"A win on the road at Tri-West is big for our confidence and come at a critical point. After West Chase we knew we were a better team than our performance, and to our squad's credit, they stepped up and made some important strides. We have to just keep working and improving and now we have a launching point to move forward," Wokoun commented.

The Clovers (4-2) will battle Owen Valley, Sullivan and White River Valley at Rolling Meadows Thursday at 5 p.m.
