Buttery appeals 35-year sentence
A Russellville man who received a 35-year prison term March 2 in Putnam County Circuit Court on March 2 is appealing his sentence.
Chad Buttery, 28, was convicted by a jury on Jan. 15 of Class B felony dealing in methamphetamine and Class C felonies possession of anhydrous ammonia and possession of chemical reagents. In addition, the jury found that Buttery should be deemed a habitual offender.
Judge Matthew Headley sentenced Buttery to two six-year sentences with four years executed and two years probation on each of the Class C felonies, which will run concurrently to each other and consecutively with a 14-year, all-executed sentence for the Class B felony. Headley then enhanced Buttery's sentence by 15 years for the habitual offender designation.
Buttery -- who admitted in court that he had struggled with meth addiction for some time -- maintained his innocence for the crimes he was convicted of on March 2.
Buttery was arrested in Oct. 3. After a traffic stop for a non-working license plate light by a Greencastle Police Department officer led to a vehicle search. That search turned up meth precursors and the components of a rolling meth lab.
Buttery fled from the vehicle, but was apprehended shortly after the traffic stop.
A pre-sentence investigation revealed that Buttery had been involved in 19 Putnam County court cases.
