Extension homemakers sponsor pop tab collection day, benefit Ronald McDonald House

Putnam County Extension Homemakers are sponsoring its second annual Pop Tab Collection Day for Ronald McDonald House of Indiana. Members will be set up in the front parking lot of the Greencastle Wal-Mart from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 20 to receive tabs from anyone who would like to contribute.

Extension Homemakers have been collecting pop tabs for several years now. Its goal is to donate more than one million tabs to benefit the Ronald McDonald House.

In-coming Extension Homemaker County president Geneva Dorris has chosen "Living Green" as the theme for her program year. Many people are looking for ways to commit to saving the environment and live a little "greener."

According to Dorris, saving pop tabs, as well as recycling the cans, is one more way the community can save and recycle for the benefit of not only the land but also fellow citizens.

Tabs are not limited to tabs from beverage cans. Tabs from pet foods, soup and snack food cans are also acceptable.

Extension Homemaker County Volunteer Community Support Chair Kim Lawrenz knows once saving the tabs has started, it becomes not only an easy, but also an addictive habit. In addition, she knows there are people in the community who save tabs, but may not know what to do with them or where to take them to benefit the Ronald McDonald House. Anyone who has tabs they want to contribute can drop them off to the volunteers, who will be manning the drop site June 20.

After the tabs are recycled, Ronald McDonald House uses the proceeds for its general operations. The house benefits families who stay there while their sick children receive care at local Indianapolis children's hospitals.

Extension Homemakers invite everyone in the community to help them reach its goal of contributing more than one million tabs to help the Ronald McDonald House.
