Max E. Herriott, 97, of Greencastle died Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Asbury Towers in Greencastle.

He was born in Putnam County on July 13, 1911, the son of Jessie and Nettie Ruble Herriott.

In 1921 he moved with his family to Benton County, Indiana, where his father had a business. He graduated from Freeland Park High School in 1929.

Mr. Herriott married Edna Reynolds in 1932, and she preceded him in death in 1990. He went to Chicago where he became manager for Atlantic and Pacific grocery stores for 16 years. After that time he and his wife bought and operated Lincoln Art Manufacturing Company.

In 1958 they moved back to Putnam County and there they bought and operated the Herriott Paint and Wallpaper Store in Greencastle until their retirement in 1973.

He was a long time member of the Greencastle Presbyterian Church, in which he served as an elder and a deacon. For 41 years he was a member of the Kiwanis Club. One of his hobbies was traveling with the WBCC and the International Travel Club.

In 1991, he married Evelyn Heller, and she preceded him in death in 2007.

He is survived by three grandchildren, Lynn Flanagan and husband Robert, Denise Palmer and husband Robert and Wayne Herriott; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including Maxine Herriott Williams; special friends Valerie and Robert Hudson, John and Jean Thomas, and Marjorie Strohm; two stepchildren, Carol Heller Bruen and husband James and David Heller; two step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, son Glenn E. Herriott in 2006; sister Helen Herriott Eiteljorge; and three brothers, Thomas, James and John.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home with Pastor Wes Kendall officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. Calling will be from noon until time of services at the funeral home.
