Registration for after-school enrichment program begins

Thursday, September 3, 2009

GREENCASTLE -- Elementary students needing help with reading can sign up for reading tutoring at Gobin United Methodist Church, located on the campus of DePauw University.

Registration for the after-school enrichment tutoring will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 8 and will continue at the same times Sept. 9 and 10 at the church.

Students will meet with their DePauw tutor twice each week for one hour of individual instruction. Those who ride the school bus may have an additional half hour of crafts and activities. Sessions are scheduled after school from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Cathy Merrell will be directing the program, which has served hundreds of Putnam County students since 1991. Tutoring will begin Sept. 14 and continue until DePauw classes end in December.

After-school enrichment serves from 35 to 40 Putnam County students each year with a unique program helping elementary students build decoding, fluency and vocabulary skills.

"Sound Effects" materials, developed for the Reading Improvement Center by program director Ellen Dittmer, offer struggling readers much-needed practice in the form of games and activities.

After-school Enrichment is a partner of United Way of Putnam County, with additional support from individuals, organizations and the generosity of Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church.

There is a small monthly charged for the program, with reduced fees available. Contact Dittmer at 246-6574 or by e-mail at edittmer@tds.net for more information.
