Dillinger heist reenacted

Saturday, September 12, 2009

(Left) John Dillinger (Mark) pulled off his biggest heist at Greencastle's Central National Bank during his nearly one-year Midwest crime spree. The gang walked out of the bank with $75,000 during The Great Depression era. What made Dillinger and his crew notable was they robbed police arsenals and pulled off jailbreaks. Dillinger was also known to ask for deeds during bank robberies and mail them to the homeowners. He died July 22, 1934 at the age of 31. (Bottom) During Pioneer Days on the square Friday and Saturday, a reenactment of the infamous heist took place near the actual bank site.
