Langdon paces county golfers in WCC match over weekened
CLAYTON -- Blue skies and gentle winds welcomed golfers to Deer Creek Golf Course Saturday for the West Central Conference match. The host Cadets captured the championship with a total of 361, followed by South Putnam with a 387 and Cloverdale with a 399. Greencastle was fourth with a 431 and North Putnam was fifth with a tally of 492.
Cloverdale's Kayla Langdon led the Putnam County charge with third place finish, after carding an 86. She carded a 39 on the front nine, but a bad hole on the back nine resulted in her posting a 47 for her 86 total.
One highlight for Langdon was a chip in on the 10th hole for a birdie. Cloverdale head coach Ken Williams was pleased with the round his senior posted.
"We had a good day, a really good day," Williams said. "Kayla had a great round, except for one hole. Bad decision making or whatever happened there, I don't know, but she had a tremendous round any way you look at it. The other girls all played well too."
Elizabeth Wiley shot a 97 for the Clovers, while Sydney Shrum shot a 101 and Brooke Thompson carded a 115.
Victoria Boyette was Cloverdale's second lowest scorer, but an incorrect scorecard had her results nullified. Williams was the one who pointed out the incorrect score and after the match felt sorry for his striker, but was unapologetic about playing by the rules.
"Victoria, I'm heartbroken for her because she earned All-Conference and had a scorekeeping snafu there that according to the rules, and the rules are right," Williams said. "I pointed it out to the rules committee, I did the right thing and they did the right thing and Victoria got burnt pretty badly on it.
"I'm really disappointed for Victoria there. She's worked hard and she played well today. In my scorebook, she's All Conference. That's the way I look at it," he said.
South Putnam had a nice day on the course, recording a 387 for second place.
Heather Hughes was able to overcome a difficult day and place fourth overall with an 88. Fellow senior Grace Aker followed with a 92 and Kelsey Searles had an impressive 101. Cierra Perry shot a 106 for the Eagles and Robbie Urton finished with a 118.
The Tiger Cubs of Greencastle came out on fire and began the day well. They had one golfer finish in the Top 10 and another golfer post her personal best on the day.
Chelsea Samuels shot a 93, with Katie Hedge adding a 105, Diane Wokoun a 114 and Makenzie St. Marie 119.
"We started out really well," GHS head coach Brad Kingma said. "We got off to a good start. I think we shot one of the best front nines that we had all year, then kind of lost it on the back. It seemed like we weren't able to finish well, particularity Katie and Diane.
"Makenzie played really well. This is not even close to anything she has shot before. This is by far her personal best. We've been working and she's had some good sessions out on the range before we came out here and it helped. She played really well," Kingma added.
Kingma noted that Samuels struggled with some inconsistent play, but was able to come out with a good round. The Tiger Cubs will be bringing back their entire team and the future looks bright.
"We've got something to build on and something to look forward to. We have everyone coming back and a couple new people next year. We've got county and sectional coming up, so hopefully they can build on it," Kingma commented.
Also making strides on the day were the North Putnam Cougars. Fielding its first team in two years, North Putnam had their No. 1 golfer finish eight strokes out of All Conference contention.
Valerie Scott came out and fired a 107 for North Putnam, while Josie Parent and Ellen Wilborn 122. Carlie Shearer shot a 141 and Emmy Rees added a 148.
North Putnam head coach Linda Patrick was pleased with the effort her girls put forth on the day and is optimistic about the future of the North Putnam program.
Langdon, Hughes, Aker, Samuels and Wiley all earned All-Conference status.
Cloverdale will travel to West Vigo Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.; while GHS will travel Terre Haute South Monday at 5 p.m. North Putnam will host Western Boone Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. and South Putnam will next be in action Thursday at the County Tournament.
