Greencastle rolls over Vikings

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

TERRE HAUTE -- The Greencastle boys' varsity soccer team didn't waste any time jumping on the host West Vigo Vikings last night. It took only 23 seconds for David Cath to deliver a pass to a slashing Spencer Moore, who beat the Vikings back line and fired a shot past keeper Ryan Martin to put the Tiger Cubs up 1-0.

That was the beginning of constant barrage against the Vikings defense for the next 15 minutes of play.

West Vigo was able to regroup and hold off the Tiger Cubs until 20:59 to play in the half. Nate Jones headed a rebounded shot back in for what appeared to be a certain goal until defender Ethan Wyrick batted the ball out. The resulting infraction for handling the ball in an obvious goal scoring opportunity gave Greencastle a penalty kick. Wyrick was sent off with a red card.

Jones stepped up and blasted the free kick into the corner of the goal to give the Tiger Cubs a 2-0 advantage.

West Vigo was forced to play a man short for the remainder of the game as a result of the red card violation.

Shortly following, Mitchell Ball added another goal to extend the lead to 3-0. Evan Smith provided the assist.

Kyle Parker recorded two saves for Greencastle in the half. The Tiger Cubs continued to control the game in the second half, making use of their man advantage as well as substituting freely to keep fresh players in the game.

Cam Cash hit a nice shot into the side net at 34:03 to play with an assist from Lossan Jones.

Moore added his second goal of the night with an assist from Jon Good at 27:41 and Mitchell Robinson connected on a David Cath assist with 5:07 to go.

Sweeper Steven Miller rounded out the Tiger Cubs scoring when he took a pass from Trevor Teal and out ran the Vikings back line then fired in a shot with 1:38 left in the game.

GHS improves its season record to 7-0-2 and will travel to Indianapolis Thursday to take on Covenant Christian at 5 p.m. The JV game will be held at 7 p.m.
